Tackling the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional Exam: A Personal Journey
Introduction
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional (CSAP) exam is renowned for its difficulty, not just among AWS certifications, but across the entire IT landscape. Many professionals, including myself, find it more challenging than other tough exams like PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) or ISC2’s Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
The Challenge
Why is the CSAP exam so daunting? First, it covers a vast array of AWS services and products in depth. Second, the questions are meticulously crafted to test your true understanding, including “distractors” — plausible but incorrect answers designed to catch those with incomplete knowledge. Third, the exam is physically and mentally grueling, with 75 questions over three hours requiring intense focus.
My First Attempt
My first attempt at the CSAP exam was in July 2015, fresh off passing the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam. Overconfident, I dived in unprepared and failed miserably. I hadn’t grasped the exam’s depth and breadth, nor did I manage my time well. Realizing my mistake, I dedicated seven weeks to intense self-study, using every resource I could find, from AWS whitepapers to the console itself.
Success After Hard Work
By September 2015, I was ready for another attempt and passed comfortably. Since then, I have recertified three times. Initially, AWS offered a shorter recertification exam every two years, but now a full exam is required every three years.
Preparing Again
In June 2021, with my certification expiring in October, the pressure was on. The thought of letting my certification lapse was nerve-wracking. Despite the nerves, I booked the exam for a quiet time when I could focus without distractions. Due to a lack of in-person testing slots, I opted for remote proctoring through PSI.
The Remote Exam Experience
On exam day, I set up my testing environment according to PSI’s guidelines and downloaded their software, which required a bandwidth check, webcam, and microphone verification. The proctor validated my identity and testing space via webcam, ensuring no unauthorized materials were present.
The Exam
The exam itself was as challenging as expected. The initial questions were tough, but I settled into a routine. My strategy involved a first pass to flag difficult questions, aiming to have half my time left for review. This helped me manage my time effectively and tackle flagged questions with more confidence.
A Near Disaster
Toward the end, my laptop battery unexpectedly drained despite being plugged in, likely due to the software’s high CPU usage. This added a layer of panic as I struggled to submit my exam. Fortunately, I managed to submit it in time and passed.
Preparation Tips
To prepare, I used the A Cloud Guru Exam Simulator and regularly engaged with AWS updates and whitepapers. Focus on best practice whitepapers and any areas less familiar to you. Joining community discussions and regular “Office Hours” on platforms like Discord can also provide valuable insights and support.
Conclusion
The CSAP exam is a rigorous test of your AWS expertise, but with dedicated preparation and a strategic approach, it’s achievable. Stay focused, manage your time well, and use all available resources to enhance your knowledge and confidence. See you in three years for the next recertification!
