Google held its annual Made by Google hardware event on Tuesday, and with so many announcements, some key details may have been missed. We’ve gathered some of the more interesting AI-related features that didn’t get much attention, such as the image-generating Pixel Studio and Pixel Screenshots, which helps organize and save information from screenshots.
Call Notes Summarizes Your Conversations
For those who struggle with remembering details, Call Notes could be a helpful feature. Available on the Pixel 9 series, Call Notes saves a summary of your conversation after a call, along with a transcript, directly in your phone’s call log. While this may raise privacy concerns, Google says that Call Notes works entirely on-device and notifies all participants when recording is active. However, security experts will need to assess this further.
Pixel Studio: A New Image-Generating App
Exclusive to the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel Studio is an image-generating app powered by an on-device AI model as well as Google’s Imagen 3 model running in the cloud. The app allows users to enter prompts to generate creative images, add stickers, and make edits. Although Pixel Studio requires a stable internet connection despite its on-device component, creations can be shared through Google Messages. Currently, Pixel Studio cannot generate human faces, likely due to earlier issues with the Gemini model.
Pixel Screenshots Are Now Searchable
If you frequently take screenshots—such as for tickets, QR codes, or boarding passes—you know how difficult it can be to locate specific images later. Pixel Screenshots, a new app available on the Pixel 9 series, addresses this issue by using AI to analyze the content of your screenshots, including any text, people, or objects. Unlike Google Photos, Pixel Screenshots works locally on your device. For example, if you’ve taken several screenshots of squirrel-themed gifts for a friend, you can simply search for “squirrel” in the app, and all related images, along with links and summaries, will appear. Pixel Screenshots also allows you to search for details like door codes and addresses within your photos.
